Do It For The Culture Volunteer Day: Waimea Valley Clean-Up

We are excited to welcome you and your family to join Do It For The Culture, INC, and the Waimea Valley team for our special Volunteer Day. As part of this service learning event, you will be participating in a volunteer project and you have the opportunity to sign up for a free cultural activity. The projects you participate in will help us maintain our gardens and cultural sites. We hope that you have a wonderful day with us and truly appreciate your time and dedication to ensuring that this wonderful Valley will be here and thrive for many generations.

Your day will go from 8:30am to 12:30am and can include: Weeding, Garden Cleanups, maintenance of cultural sites and Invasive species control.

Please be on time; if you are late the group may leave without you. Also, be aware that if you do not participate in the volunteering, you are not eligible for the free entry or the cultural activity.

We will be doing a volunteer project in the Valley.

Keep in mind that after the work is done, you will have free admission to the Valley for the rest of that day, as well as the option to participate in cultural activities and other fun things like botanical tours. We hope that you take advantage of the opportunity to explore Waimea’s gardens and cultural sites. You can even go for a swim at the falls if it is open.

There is food available for purchase on site if you didn’t want to bring your own lunch.

They will provide all tools, but you are welcome to bring personal gloves

Details

What Age: All ages are welcome to attend, but any volunteers under 18 will need to have a parent or guardian go with them to volunteer.

What to bring:

  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • Insect Repellant: There are some areas with lots of mosquitos
  • Rain gear: Raincoats and something waterproof for electronics etc. may want to consider a change of clothes for after work on rainy days
  • Work clothes: We recommend sturdy long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Keep in mind that the work clothes are likely to get dirty and stained. Gloves, if you want your own (I will provide as well, but size ranges are limited). If you plan to swim at the falls after volunteering, you can wear bathing suits under your work clothes, but I recommend just bringing them to change into.
  • Shoes (REQUIRED for safety): Closed toed work shoes (no sandals please) and be sure that you are ok with them getting dirty.
  • Reusable Water bottles: We provide a water refill station in the morning
  • A Face Mask (suggested): We strongly recommend that masks be worn in the visitor’s center, the gift shop, and any other indoor areas, as well as public spaces where large groups gather like near the waterfall. It may be removed with some degree of security during the workday when you are outdoors, but wearing a mask is encouraged whenever you are in proximity to people who are not part of your immediate household especially when there are large groups or the 6ft of social distancing is difficult. If you are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated, we recommend keeping your mask on at all times for your safety and to stop the spread of Covid-19.
  • A Positive attitude and a smile: The most important things to bring!

Terrain: We will set up projects in areas that are in the front half of the gardens and are easy to get to, but we will be outdoors, so you should be ready for uneven terrain.

Great for families. Bring the kids and friends to beach cleanups and restoration projects. See where plastics end up and why it’s important to reduce plastic use and commit to more sustainable agriculture and fishing with less adverse human impact.

Be sure to RSVP, sign a waiver (if applicable) and check with the mentioned organizer to confirm details in advance.

Some snorkel, dive or beach cleanups may require proper certification and being comfortable in or around the water and familiar with water safety. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out. Mahalo 🤙
